Feeling Blue
I'm feeling uncommonly blue.
That is, blue in a rather uncommon way.
Why is it that "feeling blue," is a synonym for "feeling sad, melancholy, and all together unhappy"? In my opinion, it should be quite the other way around. Blue doesn't strike me as a somber and despondent color, but rather as a particularly bright and jaunty one. So when I hear the words, "I'm feeling blue" I'm always a little inclined to believe that the person who spoke them is actually feeling happy and cheerful.
