Dreaming

"Sailboats wish that they were stars, floating softly in the sky, among our dreams that bid goodbye..."

Dreams really are incredible things. The same dream can be colorful and unbelievably brilliant at one time in our lives, and at another time only a gray shadow of what it once was. Childhood dreams grow and change even as the dreamer does. They alter to fit altering desires, or are even completely abandoned as new ones emerge.

We form attachments to them, base our goals on them, and work hard to attain them...

... but sometimes a dream looses it's color. Sometimes it becomes dim in the radiance of a new, even more magnificent dream. The green slips off the leaves, and the blue fades from the sky, and even the sun casts shadows instead of light. It's always a little confusing when you first realize that your vibrant dream world isn't everything you thought it was, but is gray and shadowy when compared with a new, grander dream. When this happens, sometimes you have to take a deep breath and bid the dream goodbye.

Standing under the starry night sky and thinking about my lifetime of dreams floating around with the constellations, I can't help but be thankful that not all of the dreams that I once cherished actually became realities. It often seems that the withholding of a dream was really infinitely more of a blessing than the accomplishment of that dream would have been. It's good sometimes to look back, to consider that what once seemed like an inconsolable denial was really a loving gift, leading me a step further on the pathway to a life of joy in God. It's a huge comfort to know that, in a lifetime filled with fleeting dreams, I am in the hands of a loving Savior who knows my path.

  1. Lovely and thoughtful post, Jessica! Colorful dreams...I only dream in black and white-so you made me rather wistful. It must be nice to be able to see colors in one's dreams...
It was nice visiting with you this past Sunday!
