Mountains in the Midwest

The second weekend in March, like so many other weekends, is an excellent weekend to travel. That being the case, I decided to take a trip out to Colorado to visit my brother in the snow- dusted (unfortunately not covered) Rockies. Due to an injury, conditions that were far less than ideal, and the convenient presence of my brother's staunch little Jeep wrangler, our plans to cross-country ski across a sprinkling of the not-so-snowy Rockies changed into plans to cross-country drive across a considerably larger (though still not so large) handful of them.

After a couple short adventures down some improved dirt roads, (well, they are at any rate called improved roads. And improved they may well be, although that does make one wonder exactly what form they were in before being improved) we made the wise decision to continue our adventure on the broad highways that sweep across the snow-capped peaks and wend around the ice-bound lakes of the Rockies...

We were rewarded by the delightful sight of miles of endless road stretching out in front of us, and the steady forward motion of our loyal little car, now unhampered by unrelenting snow banks and ensnaring muddy roads....

... and as a special bonus, we watched this courageous hot air balloon as it made it's slow descent to a frozen field. I can't help but feel that a mid-air enterprise such as a flight in a hot air balloon might be a bit more pleasant in weather conditions that are at least slightly warmer than freezing. All the same, I highly commend the balloon and it's accompanying pioneers for their spirit of adventure.

What better way to wrap up an adventure than by finding a coffee shop, albeit one in the middle of a bustling airport, in which to sit and have a nice conversation over a cup of hot coffee?
